In 1847, Milan was ruled by the Austrians, commanded by Marshal Radetzky. The Milanese people were exhausted by the lack of freedom, and when an Italian cardinal was appointed to the Milanese curia, they took to the streets in celebration, with no intention of revolt. But the celebrations were stopped by the Austrians with harsh and cruel repression.

Who is that scruffy-looking guy who lives alone in the renovated stables of Villa Guelfi? He spends his days doing nothing and avoiding contact with everyone. And when he realizes that a community of young people has settled illegally in the villa and is dedicated to caring for the abandoned countryside and vineyards, he gets nervous and wants to chase them away. They are students, recent graduates, agronomists, and among them is Matilde, who was born there and worked in the vineyard with her grandfather, Count Guelfo Guelfi, as a child. They too are intrigued by this misanthropic gentleman with a mysterious past: why does he live there alone and refuse to have contact with anyone? As the seasons pass, the conflict with this community of young men and women turns into coexistence, and eventually into an alliance. And Adriano finds himself looking after, in his brusque way, the young Countess Matilde, who is pregnant by one of the young men...

Le Nozze di Figaro marked the beginning of Mozart’s collaboration with Da Ponte. At the premiere in 1786, the success was mixed in Vienna, but Prague was enthusiastic about this love imbroglio set in Seville, where the Countess and Suzanna play cat and mouse with the gentlemen, to avoid the Count’s designs on his maids… Figaro undertakes to set this little world to rights, to confound his Master while preserving the Countess’s affair with Cherubino. An infernal machine launched at full speed, which allows Mozart to produce arias of great beauty, an exceptionally determined Figaro, and reversals of situation which are the subject of brilliant ensemble numbers at the end of each act.
